Stonehill Graduate Wins International Logo Design Award For 2016 International AIDS Conference

Stonehill alumnus John Hanawalt '10 has won an international logo design contest for his submission for the 2016 International AIDS Conference to be held in South Africa. Hanawalt's logo, which was selected from hundreds of entries, will be the official mark of the Conference which will welcome over 20,000 delegates from around the world including up to 1,000 journalists. 

"In addition to the eye catching design, conference organizers selected John's logo because they were attracted to the idea of the baskets being watertight and used as a metaphor for ‘the power of a tightly woven community’. This same sense of solidarity and commitment - from community, leadership and science - has had a powerful impact on the HIV response. AIDS 2016 will celebrate this power and work to forge new pathways to overcome the epidemic," said AIDS Conference organizers.

Hanawalt's logo recreates the AIDS ribbon out of a bold geometric pattern inspired by the distinctively patterned baskets woven in many parts of Africa. Each basket is unique and the weaving of them is often a social activity. They are woven so tightly that they are able to carry water. In addition to their cultural and economic significance, the baskets are a metaphor for the power of a tightly woven community.

In September of 2013, Hanawalt moved to San Francisco to become a Senior Visual Designer with Elefint Designs. He previously worked for Fenway Community Health in Boston as its Creative Services and Social Media Manager. 

At Stonehill, Hanawalt graduated with summa cum laude honors and delivered the 2010 Commencement speech. 

In 2009, Hanawalt won the Martin Institute's art contest and its accompanying Fellowship in the Arts for his art piece Little Boxes, a collage of images which reflect the complexity and ambiguity of globalization.

Hanawalt was also actively involved with the student-run design studio, InHouse Design as well as the College’s literary magazine Rolling Stonehill.  For three semesters, he served as production manager for the student-published magazine. In addition, Hanawalt worked closely with the Cushing-Martin Gallery, curating three exhibits.
