Counseling Services staff members regard each student as a unique individual and empowers the student's efforts to attain self-understanding, integrity, and academic success. Our staff members work to enhance the mission of the college by supporting and assisting students within the college community.

What We Offer

Individual counseling is appointment-based.  Students seek individual counseling for a variety of reasons including but not limited to adjustment, identity exploration, anxiety, depression, trauma, relationship concerns, and stress/time management.  Individual counseling is available on a short-term, goal-oriented basis, and after the intake period, is typically bi-weekly.  Students are assigned a clinician based on schedule availability.  They can request a specific clinician but this could result in waiting for an appointment if that clinician is full, and we are not always able to honor all requests. Confidentiality is assured and there is no additional cost for services received in the center. Under some circumstances, the student's needs may extend beyond the support available at Counseling Services and a referral to an off-campus resource would be made.   URGENT appointment slots are reserved daily and if a student is experiencing crisis and feels they would benefit from being seen sooner than our next available routine slot, the student can inquire about "URGENT" session availability.  Medication consultation is available for ongoing counseling clients of Counseling Services with our consulting psychiatric nurse practitioner.  Students will utilize their health insurance to fill prescriptions through the pharmacy of their choosing.  For more in-depth understanding of the counseling process, our services, the scope of support available on-campus, and when off-campus referral may be utilized, please see our General Information Handout that we present to students upon intake.  


Groups are formed based upon student needs and concerns and are typically psycho-educational in format.   Counseling Services will announce group offerings each semester.  Previous group topics have included healthy relationships, body image, self-esteem, and expressive arts. 

Assessment might be used in conjunction with ongoing counseling.  Current assessment services available include personality assessment, various mental health screening tools, anger assessment, and career interest assessment.  Counseling Services collaborates with the Office of Accessibility Resources to assist students with referrals for area providers of psychological testing around disorders that may be interfering with a student's learning process.  Counseling Services also collaborates with a local specialty agency to provide substance abuse assessments. 

The Counseling Services staff is available to Stonehill faculty and staff to address student concerns. The staff is available to discuss concerns or to make formal presentations on specific topics. The clinicians also provide training to orientation leaders and resident assistants, as well as supervision to graduate-level trainees in such fields as counseling and social work.
